Artist Statement: On Mask Making
Recently, I’ve been drawn to the desire to create a series of masks exploring the hiding and decoration of the face. Theses masks were taken from a mold created from a cast of my face, so the masks all have my features and are by their nature, personal.
I have a strong affinity with cut-out spaces in its veiling, yet revealing, decorative properties as there is a boundary that is not quite there between the inner body and the outer surroundings.
For this series of masks, I have experimented with the possibilities of constructing these cut-out spaces in different materials.
This reoccurring theme in my work – I have been creating sculptures the human form with patterns in metalwork for just over 7 years - is slightly unnerving as appears as quite a visually superficial element but the reality is the exploration of the convergence of the inside and outside being.
